Dunguaire Castle in Kinvara hosts Medieval Banquets nightly during the summer months. The entertainment celebrates the richness of Ireland's literary and musical past and evokes the colourful characters that are so much a part of the castle's history.

More informal Irish music sessions can be found in the many pubs and hotels in Galway and Salthill. For the more energetic, discos also take place thoughout the city and Salthill. For the less energetic, there is an eleven screen Omniplex cinema situated near the city centre.

Festivals and events

A number of Music Festivals are held in Galway City throughout the year.

  1. Galway Arts Festival in mid July features a wide variety of national and International acts. Theatre, music, dance, film, exhibitions, comedy, literary and children's events all feature in this festival.
  2. Salthill festival in early July features an open-air concert each evening. There is also open-air theatre and literary events. This year featured a spectacular air show with aircraft from the US, Germany and Irish Air Corps.
  3. The Galway International Oyster Festival is held at the end of September to celebrate Galway's rich annual Oyster harvest. It is the biggest Oyster festival in Ireland. The Irish and World Oyster Opening Championships are held during the festival, as well as superb banquets and top class entertainment, and of course rich, creamy Guinness.
  4. The Galway Races, a 7 day festival of horse racing takes place at the end of July each year, in the famous Ballybrit race course. It is probably the largest and most popular in the country, with top class racing and with top class fields, and is a most enjoyable event. Two smaller meetings are held in September and October.
  5. Greyhound racing is a great night out. The Greyhound Track is situated in College Road, within walking distance of the city centre. Race meetings are held every Tuesday and Friday night, and every night during the Annual Galway Race Festival week.
